Amigos Interpreters & Translators
Established in 1996, Amigos Translate (now trading as Amigos: Interpreters & Translators) is the first and only continuously operating, non-government interpreting and translating agency in Tasmania.
We provide experienced and professional interpreters throughout all of Tasmania.
Mission of company
To improve the expectations, reputation and quality of interpreting services in Tasmania and ensure the industry is fully accountable.
In July 2015, BGM Amigos Pty Ltd assumed ownership of Amigos Translate and set to work to transform the company into a modern, professional interpreting service. The Managing Director, Michael Morgan, has tertiary qualifications in applied linguistics, accounting and finance, management, community services, and teaching/education.
Under the new ownership, Amigos is committed to working closely with NAATI and AUSIT to ensure all our interpreters are fully competent and act professionally at all times.
We are also committed to professionalising the language services industry in Tasmania. To this end, our Training Officer(s) provide training for our clients’ staff to enable them to distinguish high-quality and substandard interpreting practices based on the Code of Ethics for Interpreters.
What makes us stand out from the rest of the industry?

We employ all of our interpreters and adhere to all fair work/employment and taxation standards and workplace safety laws. Our staff members are fully covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance and WorkCover. We encourage all our interpreters to join the Union for Interpreters & Translators (Professionals Australia)
We have and continue to attract the most experienced, qualified, and professional interpreters. Most of our interpreters have some form of NAATI Certification and/or hold university qualifications or are studying. Many have masters’ degrees or doctorates.
We provide ongoing training and the AUSIT Code of Ethics is at the core of our employee obligations and training.
By the end of 2021, we aim to be able to provide NAATI certified interpreters in all languages where there is a demand for NAATI certification

Our interpreters – the key to our success
AMIGOS: Interpreters & Translators is proud to employ the most highly qualified and experienced interpreters in Tasmania. We have over 300 casual interpreters on our books in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, and Burnie plus 7 permanent full-time interpreters. We employ over 80 NAATI interpreters (virtually all NAATI in Tasmania besides the Mandarin language) and these deliver the majority of jobs. We can provide interpreting services across virtually all languages and dialects (150+) and actively supplement our interpreting team as new languages are required.
Employing interpreters ensures that we have the best available interpreters ‘on our books’ because they know their rights to receive superannuation, be insured, have PAYG tax withheld, etc., and will not work for businesses that do not provide full benefits or ask them to sub-contract using an ABN. (BGM Amigos Pty Ltd, on commencing ownership of Amigos Translate, obtained a private ruling from the Australian Taxation Office confirming that interpreters are employees and NOT subcontractors. The full ruling can be supplied on request.)
All staff participates in at least four training and development activities each year provided free of charge by Amigos and delivered by AUSIT and/or our in-house NAATI Certified Training Officer(s). Our Training Officer(s) deliver internal training courses on employment/induction, as required and as needs are identified.
We are always working towards assisting Amigos NAATI certified interpreters become members (Full Member, Senior Practitioner or above) of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) and encourage and actively promote membership of the Union (Professionals Australia).
